A QUIET REVOLUTION FOR IRISH SCHOOLS - 25th Oct 2011

Microstrain has teamed up with UK manufacturer quietrevolution™ to become the exclusive distributor of the QR5 vertical axis turbines in Ireland. In the first project of its kind, 6 turbines were installed in 2011 as part of the SB2 schools initiative.
The Quiet Revolution turbines were complimented by Solar PV and Rainwater Harvesting systems, to provide a full sustainable solution for five recently constructed education facilities.
These included;
Bantry Gael Scoil
1 Quiet Revolution Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
12,000 Litre RainWater Harvesting Tank
Bantry Community College
1 Quiet Revolution Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
7.2kW Solar PV Array
40,000 Litre RainWater Harvesting Tank
Abbeyfeale Community College
2 Quiet Revolution Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
7.2kW Solar PV Array
60,000 Litre RainWater Harvesting Tank
Wicklow Community College
2 Quiet Revolution Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
17.4 kW Solar PV Array
Tullamore Colaiste Cholim
7.2kW Solar PV Array
12,000 Litre RainWater Harvesting Tank
These projects saw the first quietrevolution™ vertical axis wind turbines and the German manufactured Solon PV System to be installed in Ireland.
Microstrain have become distribution partners with quietrevolution™ of the UK, and Solon of Germany to deliver their high quality products to the Irish market. For further details on rainwater harvesting, wind and solar solutions, do not hesitate to contact the Microstrain team.

This innovative product removes water from the trench along its length using one or more outlets, improving efficiency of the drain, removing far larger quantities of water than would otherwise be possible.
When large format tiles are selected, Stormtech is an essential component, as it removes the need to crosscut the tiles. When used in bathrooms, particularly shower areas the slope of the floor can be made into a uniform direction, without the multiple fall required when using central floor drains. This increases safety significantly by allowing the use of non-slip tiles, reducing the amount of water pooling on the floor surface and removing the need for steps, hobs and frames, thus reducing trip hazards.
The 316 stainless steel grate provides a prestige finish with design flexibility to allow it to be used in contemporary or classic styles.
Available in 38mm and 65mm widths

GREEN ENERGY IS THE WAY FORWARD - Minister Sargent
Minister
for Food and Horticulture Trevor Sargent TD recently visited a renewable
energy installation completed by a Malahide Company, Microstrain Ltd.
Commenting on the wind turbine and solar collector system the company had installed Minister Sargent said, ‘Renewable energy solutions are an essential part of our future. It is imperative that we move away from our dependance on oil, not just for the sake of the environment but for our financial survival too. I’m very encouraged to see businesses moving into this market. Indeed, as my colleague Eamon Ryan has said “the recovery is Green” and investment in sustainable solutions offers us the best way to face up to our financial and climatic difficulties.’
Ivan Mc Fadden Technical Manager in Microstrain added, ‘In recessionary times installing some form of green technology such as a wind turbine may seem like a costly investment but the benefits of doing so have increased in the recent years. As well as lowering you carbon footprint a well-placed turbine can save the customer a considerable amount of money.’
Following their success in the Stormwater market Microstrain has expanded into the sustainable energy sector and now supplies and installs high quality solar hot water and photovoltaic systems, along with wind turbines from 1.5kW to 45kW. This wide range of green products ensures that Microstrain will have an energy saving solution for any customers needs.
The wind turbine being viewed today is a 5kW German model. This size turbine is ideally suited for a domestic user or small farm. It can generate between 8000kW/hrs and 12000kW/hrs depending on site conditions and location. This particular turbine is exempt from local planning requirements due to its height and size. The turbine is also connected to the national electricity grid under the Micro generation Scheme. The scheme was announced by Minister Ryan in February of this year and as a result of this, the customer can get paid as much as €0.19 for every kW/hr that is not used on site. This rate applies for the first 3000 kW/hrs exported to the grid and then reduces to €0.10 for every kW/hr exported thereafter.
